Breshna was just 13 years of age when her father sold her in marriage to an older man – a man who beat and raped her again and again. One day, her husband decided to sell her to another man, who also raped her and moved her to the border of Afghanistan with the intention of prostituting her.
Once again Breshna was sold, this time to a 50-year-old man. He subjected her to unspeakable abuse, over and over. He then transported her to Kabul and forced Breshna to become his third wife, locking her in a room.
Eventually Breshna managed to escape and was referred to Hagar. Upon her arrival, she was a violent and dirty 17-year-old girl who was in pain and had numerous medical problems. Hagar staff spent the next three months helping to restore Breshna to health through hospital visits and medication.
Breshna received counseling and one-on-one care. Through these sessions and consistent love, she began to share her story. The staff listened to her, provided activities that she enjoyed, and helped her to deal with her pain.
After three months Breshna’s smile had returned and she was ready to begin reintegrating back into society. Her thankfulness overflowed to the Hagar staff and other clients who had helped her.
“When I arrived at Hagar I didn’t know if I was an animal or a human being,” Breshna explains today. “But now I know I am a human.”
