Srey's Story
Tricked and Trafficked, Srey is Confident Now
My name is Srey*. I am 18 years-old. I lived at Hagar for almost two years, after I was trafficked in Cambodia.
When I first came to Hagar I did not want to stay. I cried and felt nervous. I was very lonely because I did not know anyone. I wanted to run away. But a house mother at Hagar’s shelter comforted me, and I started to feel better.
I received a lot of support and care from Hagar like shelter, clothes, food, counseling, and skills training. What I liked most about being at Hagar was listening to Jesus’ words. Before, I didn’t believe. But I had an experience with God and now I believe in Him.
My life has changed a lot in two years. I used to be very quiet and cried a lot. I liked to avoid people, especially crowds. Overtime, I gained courage with my counselor’s help. They encouraged me to be strong. Now I am able to think for myself and solve problems. I have a lot of friends now and we love and support each other.
A few months ago, I completed Hagar’s soft-skills and vocational training. I had always liked the idea of being a tailor, so I chose to learn tailoring (through Hagar’s Career Pathways Program).
Today, I can support myself. I rent a room and Hagar helps me. I work as an office receptionist, but in the future I want to have my own tailoring shop. I am looking for a part-time job as a tailor on the weekends. I save a little bit of money every month. I am satisfied with what I have now, but I will try my best to fulfill what I want to be in the future. I will pursue my dreams.
