Exploitation has no borders. Neither does hope.

Anya* was 13 when her own aunt sold her online. Here is how she was found and why her journey to healing has only just begun.

At 13, Anya should have been swapping funny memes and laughing with her friends. Instead, she was trapped in online child exploitation by her own aunt.

For nearly a year, Anya was sold for sex by her own aunt. The person who was meant to protect her used the same everyday apps most of us scroll through without thinking. She advertised Anya online and sold her to dozens of men.

There was no dark web and no far-off criminal network. Instead, a phone, a few apps, and someone she trusted trafficked her for a year.

Seen – The heart of Healing

Anya’s trafficking ended when the Thai police responded to a hotline tip and brought her to safety at Hagar.

For many organizations, that would be the end of the story. For Hagar, it was the beginning. Our team set out to find every person who had abused her.

“Online platforms have removed the barrier of distance, giving human trafficking unprecedented speed and scale. Exploitation is now faster, easier, and borderless.” Pim Soulsby, Hagar Strategic Intelligence Manager

Following the digital evidence trail

Hagar’s frontline investigators spent nearly 100 hours working through chat logs, digital forensics, and financial trails.

What they uncovered was staggering. The evidence identified 42 buyers from 10 different countries who had sexually exploited Anya. One of them was American.

That evidence led to the arrest of dozens of Anya’s abusers. In a joint effort with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the American perpetrator was arrested too. He was recently convicted of the federal offense of traveling across borders to sexually exploit a child.

Anya’s story did not stay in Thailand. It reached all the way to the United States. That is what borderless exploitation looks like today, and it is why Hagar’s response has to be borderless too.

The Long Journey of Restoration

Today, Anya is safe. But she is far from healed.

Her trauma runs deep, and her journey to healing is long. Hagar walks with her through trauma counseling, specialist psychosocial support, medical care, and a safe place to heal.

This is what we mean by whatever it takes, for as long as it takes. We do not hand Anya off once the headlines fade. We stay.

Pursuing justice

Anya now faces dozens of court cases in her pursuit of justice. Each one asks her to be brave again, to testify in court and tell the truth about what was done to her.

Hagar’s legal and social work teams stand beside her every step of the way, so she never walks into a courtroom alone.

Ripple

Anya is one girl. But the same apps, the same payment trails, and the same buyers reach thousands of children like her, across Southeast Asia and around the world.

Every survivor Hagar walks with becomes proof that a different story is possible. When a girl like Anya is seen, restored, and supported to seek justice, the ripple of hope and transformation reaches her family, her community, and the next child who might have been sold.

When we see and stay, miracles happen.
