When Malis* walked through the doors of Hagar’s Home of Love in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, she carried scars far deeper than anyone could see.
At just 16 years old, she had been trafficked to China, where she was forced into sexual slavery and domestic servitude.
After months of abuse, Malis finally managed to escape. But instead of freedom, she was arrested, detained as an “illegal immigrant,” and stripped of her dignity once again. When she was eventually repatriated to Cambodia, Malis returned home traumatized, hopeless, and unsure of what her future could hold.
That was when she found Hagar.
At the Home of Love, Malis began the slow but powerful journey of restoration. A caring house mother treated her like a beloved daughter. Hagar’s frontline team stepped in with medical care, trauma counseling, and education. They walked alongside her as she regained stability, learned new skills, and prepared for reintegration with her family.
Today, Malis’ life tells a very different story.
She works as a Chinese interpreter, supporting herself and her family with confidence. She is also a leader in her community, speaking out about her experiences to protect other women from trafficking and exploitation.
“I am very happy with my current situation. I have a secure job and can support my family. I am really grateful for all the support Hagar provided me.”
— Malis
Malis’ journey is proof that with the right care, healing and dignity are possible. At the Home of Love, survivors like Malis not only recover from trauma but also go on to inspire and protect others.
