Hope and Healing After Afghanistan’s Earthquake

In the early hours of September 1st, a devastating magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook eastern Afghanistan, leaving 2,200 people dead and 5,000 homes destroyed. Tens of thousands of families remain frightened and vulnerable. But thanks to the rapid generosity of Hagar’s global community, our team was able to respond immediately.

Swift Action on the Ground

Young women access Hagar’s counseling services after the Afghan earthquake.

Within days of the earthquake, Hagar’s frontline team in Afghanistan launched psychosocial support activities on the front lines to help children and families cope with the trauma they’d suffered. The team is also distributing tents, hygiene kits, food packages, and blankets to the most affected communities.

A Safe Place for Children

Hagar has just opened a dedicated safe space for children in one of the hardest-hit areas. Here, children can:

⚽ Play and interact with others

📚 Learn and keep up with education

❤️‍🩹 Receive the emotional support they need to heal

“This dedicated space allows children to play, learn, and begin the healing process in a supportive environment.”

Coordinating a Stronger Response

To strengthen and enhance these efforts, Rohullah Ahmadi, Hagar’s Afghanistan Country Director, visited Kunar province to meet with partner organizations including IOM, the UN and local community leaders. These collaborations ensure survivors receive high-quality, impactful support services tailored to their immediate needs.
