Malis’ Story: From Slavery in China to Community Leadership
When Malis* walked through the doors of Hagar’s Home of Love in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, she carried scars far deeper than anyone could see. At
The Home of Love opened in 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic. As Cambodian women were repatriated from China—many trafficked, forced into marriage, or exploited abroad—they had nowhere to go.
Traumatized and carrying deep scars, they were vulnerable to being exploited again. At the request of Cambodia’s Ministry of Social Affairs, Hagar created a safe haven: the Home of Love.
Today, trafficking to China continues. Women as young as 14 arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs and a haunted look in their eyes.
The Home of Love is where they begin again.
Daily life at the Home of Love looks simple.
Sharing meals, doing chores together, laughter around the dinner table. The stability and routine helps each woman rebuild confidence.
Survivors are welcomed like daughters by a caring house mother.
Trauma-informed counseling helps heal deep emotional wounds.
Caseworkers support each woman with medical care, education, and vocational training.
Survivors are surrounded with warmth, dignity, and unconditional love.

The Home of Love is just the beginning. Hagar caseworkers walk alongside survivors long after they leave the home:
