Empower Women with Possibilities

Malis’ Story

Malis arriving at Hagar’s Home of Love in Phnom Penh.

When Malis walked through the doors if Hagar’s Home of Love in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, she carried deep physical and psychological wounds. She had been trafficked to China at just 16 years old and forced into sexual slavery and domestic servitude. When she finally escaped, she was arrested and thrown in an illegal detention center before being repatriated to Cambodia.

At Hagar’s Home of Love, Malis slowly began her healing journey. Her house mother cared for her like a daughter and Hagar’s frontline team facilitated medical care, trauma counseling, education and career opportunities, and reintegration with Malis’ family.

Today, Malis works as a Chinese interpreter and is a leader in her community. She shares her story widely to help protect and empower other women from experiencing human trafficking.

“I am very happy with my current situation. I have a secure job and can support my family. I am really grateful for all the support Hagar provided me and my family.”
